New rules agreed by the 72 league clubs means that from the start of the 2018/19 season every club will have to have a player developed by the club in their match day squad.
See here for BBC report http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/39517843
This will be interesting for us as the definition of a club developed player seems to be one who has spent a year at the club for one year prior to the end of his under 19 season. That means from the start of the season 2018/19 we will have had to have had an under 19 player who has been at the club from before the start of next season. Or to put it another way a lad who is 18 or under must be signed this summer!
Could be fun for those clubs who do not have academies.

Assuming this isn't a late April fool, I can imagine a lot of creativity being used to circumvent the new regulation.
Find an unemployed teenager to sweep the car park on work experience who wishes to watch the home and away games free of charge and register him as a player. Get the rules changed to allow eight substitutes. Hope he doesn't fall ill.
Roll up! Welcome to the Token Teenager Show. |

We used to do this - most recently Ryan Richefond and Bradley Isaac. And before that players like Nick Carter and Mithun Nayee. |

Without being (too) disrespectful, I'm not sure that Nick Carter could ever be described as a [football] player |

Perhaps re-sign Ryan and Bradley? They looked good whenever they played. |

Played in the Conference. Good old Sue, no nepotism going on there. |

I take it this is to help the future of the game.
Which explains the fact its just the EFL and not the Premier clubs ! |

Not sure that matters too much really. For many clubs it will just be a bum on a seat.... |

It matters to us because we will have to sign an 18year old this summer on a two year deal!
That's part of our wage budget used up for someone who is NOT going to play!
Unless, off course, we are starting an academy this summer (?).

Jim Baker | Why would this teenager not play if we signed him? We may find a very good young player who can add something to the team and if he does well the club can sell him on for a lot of money, it could be a blessing in disguise this new rule. |

An under 18 player who is good enough to play in league two will be on the books of a club much higher up the pyramid. They may loan him to us but that's not the point in this instance.
It's not only us though. Many sides in league 2 do not have an academy. They too will be on the lookout for under 18s this summer.

Would either Bobson Bawling or Garnett qualify? I think Garnett may be too old when he joined and I can't remember how long Bobson's been here... |

Can players who are "injured" in the warm-up be regarded as part of the match day squad if withdrawn and replaced immediately before a game starts?
This also brings up the question of genuine injuries. Surely a club would need a spare in order to comply with the rules - unless you're prepared to have someone with a broken leg sitting on the bench just to satisfy the paperwork. |
