Don't get too excited, he's a young lad from our young set up who had earned the right to a one year contract.

Congratulations Alex and good luck for the year.

I've seen him play a few times at Lewes and he looks an excellent prospect.

Best of luck to him and pleased to see local lads progress - but what about any junior player other than under-18? Other age groups?

How do the club operate the 'Academy'? Do they only take under 18's and if so what's the criteria for someone joining if they can't see people at a younger age? Do these 17 / 18 years olds just turn up and say they want to play football? Or do Crawley scout under 18's?

Just interested.

@hoppy Check out the EEEP setup. We are category four. The lowest category. Sad

Well done Alex. A local lad (Horsham) and a good lad too. We are Cat 4 so at the moment have boys who are Under 17 and Under 18. Most of them this year are first years so I would expect them to produce much better results next year although that is if secondary importance to their development as young players. As far as scouting is concerned I can assure you that Steve and Mark Beard never stop working to identify prospects and as the club has said the aim is to look to go back to Cat 3 in the future.

I have met some of the academy lads and they are a credit to the club and them-selves. All very polite, well turned out in club track-suits and are so enthusiatic about being part of the set-up.

A positive from me about the club for a change. Smile

I know there are considerable costs and overheads with running an academy, but the returns can be pretty good too... and as we now have a lot of the infrastructure & quality staff in place... long term it has to be the best way forward for clubs of our stature.

And isn't it just a great feeling for local fans to see a lad that has come up through the ranks break into the first team...?

Absolutely Thad (sits down feeling faint) but not sure we have enough staff or facilities yet which is governed unfortunately by the finances. Absolutely right though about wanting to have local lads coming up through the ranks.
